I thought I would write about wedding favours today as I want to shout about two lovely companies who have some gorgeous favours and ideas for packaging them up for your guests. Let me start with a little bit of history for you as I think we all take this age old tradition a little bit for granted;
The tradition of giving wedding favours is a very old one. It is believed that the first wedding favour, common amongst European aristocrats, was known as a bonbonniere. A bonbonniere is a small trinket box made of crystal, porcelain, and/or precious stones. The contents of these precious boxes were generally sugar cubes or delicate confections, which symbolize wealth and royalty.
As sugar became more affordable, bonbonnieres were replaced with almonds. For centuries, almonds were commonly given to wedding guests to signify well wishes on the bridegroom’s new life.
Today, gifts to guests are commonly known as wedding favours and are shared in cultures worldwide. Wedding favours are diverse and usually complement the theme or season of the event.

ReplyDeleteHi Julie, just received your newsletter and had a quick perusal, love the "Perfect Pair" Pear timer, very kitsch and apt, love the miniature teacup with tealights, makes me want my very own dolls house again, and my 3rd like would be the lovebirds or perfect pair salt and pepper shakers as featured on your blog, or to be different - perhaps the "Love-sicle" lolly shaped soap - which would have matched my sweet theme with candy colours perfectly!!!
